課程概述

To compete in the newly emerging knowledge-centric economy, organizations around the world have undertaken various initiatives to manage their most important yet volatile asset–knowledge. Knowledge management (KM) is a systematic and organizational process for acquiring/creating, organizing, sharing, transferring, using/applying, and updating both tacit and explicit knowledge to enhance the organizational performance, improve organizational adaptability, increase values of existing products and services, and/or create new knowledge-intensive products, processes and services. While KM was developed first in industries and business functions that are basically selling knowledge–professional services, pharmaceuticals, research and development functions–it is quickly becoming prevalent in other industries, including manufacturing, financial services, and government organizations. It can be expected that most of industries will view themselves as knowledge-intensive and will develop or adopt some KM initiatives in their business units and functions.

課程目標
The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive perspective on the emergent practices in KM. Specifically, in this course, we will explain the concepts, theories, and technologies that provide the foundation for KM, processes and strategies for developing and deploying KM initiatives, and organizational, managerial, and behavioral perspectives concerning various KM activities.
課程要求
Group Project:
You are required to undertake a group project related to knowledge management research. Each group consists of 4 or 5 students. The group project needs to clearly address a research question and provide interesting results to the knowledge management area. Before your group decides the project direction and scope, you are encouraged to discuss your thoughts and plan with the instructor(s).

In your group project proposal and during the project proposal presentation, each group is required to 1) describe the motivation and importance of your research project, 2) report preliminary literature review, 3) propose the research method and/or research process employed in your project, and 4) conclude with expected research results. Each group is expected to prepare a 10- to 15-minute project proposal presentation in class and a 5-page written project proposal.

Regarding the group project presentation at the end of semester, 20 minutes are allocated to each group. Again, you need to report the motivation, literature review, the research method/process, and research findings. In addition, you have to show the significance of your research project by discussing your contributions to the knowledge management area and other areas related to your research project.

Examination:
There will be one examination, in a format of in-class, open-book and open-note. All required readings, class lectures, and case discussions will be the scope for examination questions.

Participation:
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class discussions. Levels of participation will be evaluated based on each student’s contribution to class discussions, not just on class attendance.
